Beth Tweddle burst into public consciousness over the weekend by picking up third place in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. It may not have been a vintage year for British sport, but her status as a great athlete is unquestioned and her place was remarkable given she was competing against the glamour sports of F1 and the profile of stars like Zara Philips. The good news is there are more of her ilk on the way. According to Adrian Stan, british gymnastic’s technical director, she is part of a new generation of british gymnasts who are leading us up the global rankings. In an interview about Tweddle and the state of her sport, the Observer’s Anna Kessel talked about two favourite Glasshouse themes. First, that the media interest in minority sports needs a boost. Second,  Stan pointed out that ‘in order to progress we need a better trinity between the ministries for education, health and sport’.Â
